Adapter for own CO2 Sodastream refilling can be bought on the Internet
I found information on the Internet that one can order an adapter that allows me to fill CO2 bottles, obtainable from an e-mail address:Mcleverpeople@aol.com
So I sent the following mail:
Hello, I found your e-mail address at soadahclub and I want to fill my SodastreamCO2 bottle from a larger 6kg pub bottle. On soadahclub I am told I can purchase the Adaptor from you. Can I do that?
How much does it cost?
Can I pay with Paypal or credit card?
I received an answer which finished with:
You can order here! My PayPal account >mcleverpeople@aol.com < (PayPalAccount + 1,90 Euros more)
Price Spar-Adapter 38 Euros postage insured by airmail 10,50 Euros completely 48,50 Euros PayPal + 1,90 Euro total 50,40 Euros
At Paypal you can pay from your PayPal account or with your credit card. I have a PayPal account which is much more secure than a credit card. It does not costanything so many vendors on the Internet have Paypal as a method of payment.
I paid with PayPal and about 2 weeks later the adapter was delivered by post from Germany.
This is how I fill a CO2 bottle for fizzy drinks from a large pub bottle
This is a method that suits me, it does not follow the supplied instructions.
So, anyway, this is the way I do it. First I put the empty CO2 bottle in the freezer for a few hours so it becomes about minus 15 – 20 degrees Celsius cold. This is because a cold bottle accepts more CO2, filling takes place at bottle pressure and not with a pump. By cooling the receiving bottle the pressure in it is reduced.
I have screwed on the adapter to my 6kg pub bottle that costs €25 to fill with food quality CO2 (have bargained, easy to do when you are helping the environment).
CO2 bottles for drinks have a tube internally that reaches the bottom. (CO2 extinguishers do not have a tube) so what comes out is liquid CO2, so I do not have to upturn the bottle. The adapter can only fit one way, with different threads for the big and little bottle.
I fit the little adapter by hand. Then I open fully quickly and wait for it to stop blowing, about one minute. Close the valve, unscrew the little bottle and weigh it. Empty weight is marked on the bottle 790 grammes, with 425 grammes of CO2. The bottle when full weighs 1215 grammes.
I get about 100 grammes with one filling so I return the bottle to the freezer.
When frozen I repeat the filling. I do that four times and arrive just under 1200 grammes full weight. That is enough; I have filled just about 400 grammes.
Have filled a fifth time but the bottle is overfull so I release some CO2.
This method suits me fine. When I am at the freezer and a recharge is needed I do it.
A one minute job done four times is much easier than driving off to buy expensive CO2.
425 grammes CO2 cost EURO 9 in the shop, that is EURO 21/kg. My large bottle costs EURO 25 to fill, EURO 1.8 to fill the 425 gram fizzy drink bottle. This cost I recover just by not having to drive to the shop so that after 6 fillings the adapter is paid for.
Sodastream CO2 cylinder filled slower instead
I use AGA:s (Wassermaxx) CO2 bottles to both my Wassermaxx and my Soda- stream. This is because the CO2 in the bottle that was supplied with the Sodastream tasted horrible, so I changed it for an AGA CO2 bottle when I bought my Sodastream Design machine.
So I have experimented with another Sodastream CO2 bottle just to see if it works.
First I could not get the bottle to fill. Full stop. Looked on the Internet, Sodastream have a patent that gets the valve to close when the pressure is too high. To stop others from filling their CO2 bottles…
So I tried just opening the valve a little on the pub bottle. Doing this the Sodastream bottle filled without any problem.
Old 300 grammes Sodastream bottles?
If anyone wonders, the adaptor does not fit the old 300 gramme Sodastream steel bottles. These have another screw thread. Today CO2 bottles must have a certain screw thread, different for different gases to prevent accidents. It must not be at all possible to attach the wrong gas in industry and medicine.
It is possible to use AGA’s Wassermaxx CO2 in the Sodastream drinks machine
I have a Wassermaxx and it works wonderfully. But sometimes I want a lot of CO2.
Sodastream Design have a machine that gives the most CO2 so I bought a Sodastream design as well.
When I arrived home and unpacked it I experienced 2 nasty surprises. First I founda little yellow slip headed Sodastream user licence certificate according to which
Sodastream onesidedly forced me to observe a number of obligations as well as stating that the Alco2jet bottle I had just purchased belonged to them.
Also the CO2 tasted terrible, with a flavour of metal and oil. In the 1980’s I had a Sodastream and this taste happened once then as well. Nothing dangerous, they had messed up by not putting together a completely clean CO2 bottle. CO2 is the best carrier in the world of flavinoids – the finest aromas are made using CO2 distillation. The slightest trace of dirt or oil remaining in the gas bottle makes the CO2 taste terrible.
I felt like some fizzy water so tried the CO2 bottle from my Wassermaxx in the Sodastream machine. It worked immediately and gave good fizzy water at once.
AGA are specialists with CO2 for food, so the quality is excellent and the CO2 surplus in the manufacture of Absolut Vodka is put to good use.
Aromas for Carbonated Water
My assessment on aromas for flavouring carbonated water.
Sodastream Mywater comes in 100 ml glass bottles with droppers which tend to have several problems.
- The aroma liquid is a very thick fluid and thus doesn’t easily flow from the bottle.
- As the bottle is glass, you can’t squeeze it to force the fluid out.
- You must either place the bottle upside-down for several minutes and wait for the drops, or remove the dropper with a knife and use your own syringe.
- Sodastream Mywater Orange has very little taste and even increasing the dosage doesn’t help.
Sodastream Mywater Strawberry-Lemon is acceptable, but tastes like strawberry wine gum rather than fruit. Sodastream lemon is good and their best.
The alternative is Aromhuset aromas which come in 30 ml PET bottles with droppers. These aromas are better due to the following;
- The droppers have a much better construction to that of the Sodastream bottles and therefore work excellently.
- You can squeeze the bottles to get every last drop of fluid from them and are easy to measure.
- Two thirds of a capsule is enough for one litre of water, something that you quickly get familiar with. After about twenty or thirty litres you can do this without even measuring.
- Aromhuset aromas come in many different flavours of which I intend to sample and post my findings. Having tried about half, my favourites are peach, melon, raspberry, and strawberry, absolutely awesome.
Better and Cheaper
Home made carbonated water is both better and cheaper.
You can decide for yourself the level of carbonation that you want, from either very little or a lot. This is also applies to the addition of aromas where you can mix to your own taste.
The range of products in the Sparkling Wateraromas series from Aromhuset far outstrips that of ordinary sodas that may be available at local stores. In addition you can mix different flavours to produce an even wider array which is great for the kids who love flavours such as banana, raspberry, toffee, etc.
More uncommon flavours like peppermint and absinthe are also available with peppermint being quite natural, satisfying and providing lovely fresh breath. Absinthe is great after food with its wide array of natural herbs like wormwood, anise, and fennel.
The flavours are often cleaner, have an improved taste and the quality feels better than with purchased sparkling water.
It’s easier to carbonate your own sparkling water.
Carbonating and flavouring your own sparkling water has several benefits:
- Always available at home, just get the carbonic acid.
- A broader array of tastes.
- Always the level of carbonation that you want.
- Always the level of taste that you want.
- Cheaper than purchased products.
- Environmental benefits.
- Always quality controlled water from your local water works.
- Better taste with the product line from Aromhuset.
A step up for Sodastream, AGA and other producers.
Aromas for sparkling water are absolutely required to get the full benefit of owning a soda machine. Tasty carbonated flavoured water can be tailored to your own taste through purchasing a wide array of many different flavours of which you will never get fed up with. It’s easy to see why people are starting to carbonate their own water in house. No hassle of hauling water and bottles back and forth especially when all you get is a product that is more expensive and no where near as good!
Not to mention people with health problems such as diabetics who can’t touch beverages with sugar. These people now have access to a great tasting, extremely healthy drink with a huge choice of many different aromas and flavours.
Sodastream Soda Machine
Sodastream drink maker carbonates your own mineral water. The Sodastream systems were originally invented by an Englishman named “Guy Gilbrey” in 1903. It was a machine that carbonated water at home and became a very popular in the 70’s and 80’s. Low priced soft drink competitors slowly but surely killed of the sodastream dream when they introduced the 1.5 litre PET-bottles. Now Sodastream is back, based on a combination of several factors:
- People want to reduce their intake of sugar and improve their overall health.
- Water carbonated at home is a lot cheaper than buying bottled soft drinks or pre-carbonated drinks.
- Soft drink production has a number of factors that are bad for the environment. Soft drink companies use excessive amounts of drinking water that could be used else where, truck transport of soft drinks from the factory to store produces huge amounts of carbon dioxide every year plus some countries still do no recycle their bottles.
- Lessons the need to recycle millions of plastic bottles.
- An ever growing obesity problem in many western countries is seeing families and people turn to healthier choices.
- Carbonated water costs only a few cents a litre as compared to soft drink at $1 a litre or more.
Sodastream and other carbonation machines are undoubtedly coming into their own. Carbonating your own water is a lot cheaper than buying carbonated beverages from the store. The low price of carbonic acid means a lot, and in addition you get environmental benefits, as well as not having to haul heavy drink bottles home or empty cans back to the store. But the real difference is in the assorted number of fruit flavours and aromas you can purchase from Aromhuset which can be used with Sodastream, any other soda machine and even with purchased carbonated water.
Several Swedish producers of carbonated water have had great success with flavouring carbonated water. This is simply because flavoured carbonated water quite frankly tastes better and is more refreshing than the unflavoured kind. You can now flavour carbonated water at home and the results are actually even better as you can decide for yourself how much carbonic acid to add and if the beverage should be lightly or heavily flavoured. There are actually several different flavours to choose from, like the children’s favourites Banana, Raspberry or Toffee. The health benefits are significant when compared to regular soda which easily contains 10% sugar (i.e. 1.5 litres of soda contains 150 grams of pure sugar).
You can also mix flavours to create custom-made tastes like “lemon and apple” or “blackcurrant and passion fruit”. This actually means that there are hundreds of flavours if you should ever tire with the flavours in stock. Of course, it is quite unlikely that you will tire of the original flavours because you can buy different kinds all the time – you’ll never get fed up. Even better than the cost saving over buying flavoured carbonated drinks is that everyone on an Atkins diet, low-carb or GI diet or those with diabetes now have something great to drink. Sodastream has 3-4 models Sodastream has three models or four if you count the Sodastream Jet Limited Edition.
- Sodastream Jet
- Sodastream Design
- Sodastream Jet Limited Edition
- Sodastream Pure
One machine that stands out is the Sodastream Design, its unique design and great features make it the top choice over the other Sodastream units. It also lets you add more or less carbon dioxide so that the taste is exactly as you like it.
In some countries Sodastream also sell a machine called SodaMaster and similar however without any containers for carbonic acid. This unit exists solely to sell based on its low price. Sodastream calls its containers Alco2Jet which are cartridges made from aluminium to make transportation from the filling station to the retailer easier. All Sodastream machines come with one of these containers.
It is always best practice to have two Alco2Jet-containers so that you can refill one while the other is in use. This means that you will always have flavoured carbonated water available even while the other container is being refilled.
Carbonate your own water with Sodastream
To get fresh mineral water, you simply carbonate ordinary drinking water. This can then be flavoured with the different aromas from the Aromhusets large array of different varieties. These flavours comes in 30ml bottles which is enough for about 15 litres of carbonated water making it the ideal size for home consumption without getting tired of the taste.
Carbonated Seltzer Water – What Is It
Sparkling water is the common designator of bottled carbonated water, a refreshing zero-calorie drink with any meal.
Carbonated Seltzer water is the perfect drink with any meal and can be purchased with or without flavour. Flavoured sparkling water is usually flavoured with one or more fruits. Through alternating flavours one never needs to get fed up with any one in particular and can always enjoy a nice sparkling water.
Sparkling water has no calories, no artificial sweeteners, and no synthetic colour additives. It is simply carbonated water flavoured with fruit aromas.
One can also make one’s own sparkling water in a soda machine, like the renowned Wassermaxx or Sodastream (Soda Club), and even flavour it with aromas. More and more people even build advanced machines into their kitchens for serving iced carbonated beverages. This is quite expensive, with professional set-ups going for 1 600 Euros and up; but the carbonic acid is cheap. With bottles of 3-4 kilograms and only 6-8 grams per litre, this all adds up to a few cents for a litre of sparkling water.
Using a soda machine with carbonic acid bottles of the regular 425 grams usually adds up to 16 cents per litre. This is still quite cheap compared to buying carbonated beverages, but buying large bottles of acid still costs only a fraction.
There are cheaper machines where one gets the carbonated water through a tap, but these use small canisters of carbonic acid, and they do not cool the beverage. Before purchasing such a device one should taste the sparkling water produced a number of times, to verify a proper level of carbonic acid.
If the salesperson of such machines speaks only of “lightly carbonated water” one should be careful and test the machine properly. One really should be able to mix the water so that it suits the entire family, since if anyone thinks the mix is wrong he or she will not be using the machine.
The Environment
Ecological effect – transportation and exhaust fumes
Today, water is transported all over the world and sold in plastic bottles. The water tastes the same and the carbonic acid tastes the same.
This is exactly the same water all over the world that evaporates and returns to the ground when it rains as we all know. Somehow, the water industry has succeeded in selling bottled water at high prices, the very same water that is in your own tap of which costs next to nothing.
Therefore we can see that bottled water we buy from the shops is exactly the same as we get from our taps, we are just tricked into thinking it is some how better.
Huge waste of energy
Apart from the additional cost there is a huge energy and environmental price that we are all paying through additional green house gases. These are produced through;
- Manufacturing and transportation of the bottles, capsules, cartons, pallets, and labels.
- Transportation of bottled water from the factories to the wholesaler where it is then repacked and shipped off to retailers such as supermarkets.
- Customers having to drive back to the store for recycling, or even worse throw them out with the garbage for more transportation and toxic fumes from burning.
As we can see huge amounts of green house and toxic gases are released into the atmosphere as a result of all this totally unnecessary manufacturing and transportation of these water products. And this is water that you already have in your own tap, water that is quality controlled regularly.
A soda machine takes no energy at all as it is not electric. Empty bottles and canisters are constantly being reused and the machine itself has a lifespan of many of years. Sparkling water flavor that flavor 15 liters of carbonated water only weights 30 gram.
Purchased water on the other hand is extremely energy inefficient as we have already noted above.
Raw materials
Disposable bottles, capsules, labels and cartons are squandering the minimal natural resources we have left. Even recyclable bottles have a short lifespan plus water from our natural springs is being used up at unbelievable rates.
Garbage
Carbonating your own water means a lot less garbage as you only have to purchase the occasional aroma bottle and a new machine maybe every ten years. In comparison, recycling purchased drink bottles requires multiple refuse sacks where the bottles are held until they are cleaned for redistribution or they are burned. Of course this releases a huge amount of pollution into the atmosphere.
Selling of water in stores should be illegal
The authorities should simply ban or at least add environmental information on what it takes to produce that individual bottled water product.
Savings
To carbonate your own water is cheaper than buying carbonated beverages and it can easily be done in any household or work place.
Transportation of 55 litres of water from the supermarket is reduced to a one kilo bottle of carbonic acid meaning several trips are reduced to one. Those with even bigger bottles will perhaps refill this as seldom as once a year or even more rarely as carbonic acid is a preservative which will last for years.
Minimal trips to the supermarket. If you have two canisters for carbonic acid you can simply refill the one not being used whenever you have to go the supermarket.
More room, less hassle, more time off. Those who have a soda machine at home, be it Wassermaxx, Sodastream, SodaFresh, SodaQuick, Sodamaker, or another no longer have to gather sacks of empty bottles for recycling and no longer have to stand in line to recycle them.
Make an effort for the environment. It feels good to make a difference and not contribute to the illogical transportation of water all over the world.
Refilling Smaller Carbone Dioxide Canisters From Larger Ones
For info on refilling at home, go to https://www.bordsvatten.com/kolsyrefyllning/adapter-for-egen-kolsyrefyllning-kops-pa-internet-20/ and then use the translation script on that page.
On carbon dioxide bottles, it mentions how much Co2 they contain when full, normally 425 grams on newer machines and 300 grams on the older gray Sodastream canisters. You empty the bottle completely and then put it into the freezer for a few hours. Once this is completed the smaller bottle is attached to larger bottle, placed on weighing scales and filled until the weight is correct.
For this you will need a proper valve for the big bottle as well as quality rubber hoses and couplings designed for extreme pressure. Proper couplings and hoses are also required if you decide on large bottles which hook directly into your machine.
Retailing these couplings could be a business idea for make-your-own-wine stores. You could then refill your own bottles or maybe have them refilled by someone who normally refills fire extinguishers or carbonic acid for fish tanks or for pubs. Another idea would be to become a retailer for slightly larger bottles and for two to four-kilogram refills.
Perhaps someone will even challenge Sodastream. A luxury-model CO2 pump costs about 4300 Euros and a cheaper model perhaps half. With one of these, one could refill carbon dioxide canisters in 20 seconds while the customer is waiting. Through leasing refilling machines and distributing the cost of this over one or more years, a business such as this could get started without large cost.

The business itself won’t lower prices. Wassermaxx is owned by AGA and Airliquide who has interests in other markets. Through everyone protecting themselves one provider can’t ever refill the bottles of another.
However, a new generation of soda machines is moving in with cooling systems and in-line carbonation which means no carbon dioxide is lost and large 2-7 kg Co2 bottles can be utilized. Such improvements simply makes buying such a system the only sensible choice over any other kind of flavoured drink.
These are actually small restaurant machines for home use. The water must be cold if you want a proper level of carbonation so current machines without cooling systems will probably soon disappear. Models with cooling often carbonate better than soda machines and even though they are quite expensive, the carbonic acid can be bought in large bottles making the carbonated water extremely cheap. Flavors can be ordered worldwide from allfreightfree.com.
Home Made Soda Machines
Carbonating water can be done in three different ways. You can work the acid in to the water by shaking it and you can let time do the work for you or you can increase the carbonic acid amount and then let a portion of the acid evaporate. With a Ritchie carbonator and similar devices you add carbonic acid to water or even to wine and other beverages, something that cannot be done with a soda machine. This process entails carbonating, waiting, carbonating some more, and so on however this process is too difficult and lengthy when you just require a refreshing drink.
This video shows how to carbonate water using a home-made machine in a soda-bottle. After pressurizing the carbonic acid is shaken into the water.
This is fine, as carbonic acid costs next to nothing in large CO2-bottles however the smarter way is by utilizing over-pressure as this requires no waiting or shaking.
All commercial soda machines use over-pressure and as carbonic acid is more solvent in cold water, it is best to use your refrigerator to cool it first.
An especially strong PET bottle is partially filled with water as room is needed for pressure equalizing similar to that of a purchased PET bottle.
You then add carbonic acid until you hear the pressure valves release and then release the button allowing the pressure to equalize. If you require more carbonic acid you can easily repeat these steps quickly learning what level of carbonation tastes the best for you personally. Then taste can be improved even more with adding flavor for carbonated water.
Here is a German video that shows how to carbonate water using a Sodastream with the carbonated water being immediately ready for either drinking or flavouring.
This is the best and easiest way as the bottle is stronger than normal and should last for many years.
So why are there home-made machines? Simply to reduce the price of the carbonic acid.
The acid itself is virtually free with some companies supplying five, ten or fifteen kilos for the same price. What you actually pay for is not the acid but the work involved in refilling bottles including a small mark-up. Refilling bottles of 2 kilograms upwards which is usually required for restaurants and other small businesses usually costs about 20 Euros making the average price for a litre of carbonated drinks only a few cents.
The Carbonic acid you buy for a soda machine is quite cheap costing about 10 Euros per refill which averages out to less than 20 cents per litre. As you can see, this is very cost effective when compared to purchased soft drinks. However when compared to actually using larger acid bottles, 10 Euros per refill or more than 20 Euros per kilogram of acid is quite expensive.
This is why many people see this as excessive pricing and make their own soda machines so that they can utilize bigger canisters.
The soda machine producers on the other hand will make every effort to protect their golden goose. They do this through making the customer sign different contracts and legal documents so that each producer has a monopoly on refilling their own bottles. If they were smart, they would allow refills by any company whuch if marketed properly would lead to many more sales of their base machines.
During the 1980’s one could get refill at Partymans store in Malmö in Sweden for free if you purchased three bottles of aroma. The refills where supplied by Sydbrand at reasonable and competitive prices. Sodastream consequently sued Sydbrand for trademark infringements leading to years of legal action at great cost.
Today, every soda machine producer tries to stop others from refilling their branded canisters using every legal means possible. All this even though in truth a customer can easily refill a bottle in 20 seconds while waiting in a store. This was done by a business in Germany who in turn were also attacked by Sodastream or Soda Club as they are called in Germany,
But Soda Club, or rather Sodastream lost this legal battle. In trying to stop a minimal amount of competition has allowed the opening of totally free competition. This in turn should result in free competition in all EU countries based on current EU legislation. This however will require a company daring to challenge Sodastream or by authorities taking action based on consumers who are no longer willing to accept the status quo.
Instead of making their own home made machines I think people will use the many excellent machines currently on the market such as Sodastream (specially the Sodastream Design) or Wassermaxx. Carbonic acid will be cheaper through refilling the acid from larger bottles themselves or through hooking larger canisters directly into their soda machine.
Carbonic Acid Monopoly
When you buy a Sodastream soda machine, you also pay for the acid container. If you require additional containers you pay for these as well.
Despite this, you actually do not own the bottle. Sodastream lawyers have designed a contract that you have to accept to be able to buy their machine, a contract where only Sodastream can refill the Alco2jet carbonic acid bottle. This is running up the price of acid, and it is damaging the environment.
Environmentally, the Alco2jet-bottles should be refilled by a local refilling station or directly at your local store, but this is not actually done.
Consequently, Sodastream runs a monopoly on all refilling of Sodastream machines carbonic acid bottles.
Both I and several others regard these terms as both excessive and price-driving. In an example from Sweden, when comparing Sodastream canisters of 425 gram at 9 Euros to the canisters of a competitor at 300 grams and 4 Euros, this price elevation becomes obvious.
Carbonic acid costs next to nothing and with real competition prices should range from 3 to 5 Euros.
With the correct equipment, i.e. a scale, a tap and a pump, it really is no harder to refill a canister to that of a tire on a bicycle. The process takes a total of 20 seconds and thus could easily be done while waiting in line at your local supermarket. There are also local refilling stations who today refill canisters for bars, fire extinguishers, fish tanks and more. These functions could also be easily performed at local stores and supermarkets.
In the Partyman store in Malmö in Sweden, it was possible during the 1980’s to get carbonic acid for free when buying flavours and aromas, the carbonic acid was supplied by Sydbrand. Sodastream consequently denied service to Partyman, and sued Sydbrand.
With their massive legal machinery, Sodastream crushed Sydbrand leaving them financially ruined and with an order to remove all Sodastream branding before being allowed to resume filling. So as we can see, Sodastreams desire for monopoly is not a recent phenomenon. The new contract that consumers have to accept is a continuation of this. Sodastream would probably even take action against consumers if they were bold enough to refill their canisters somewhere else.
In 2006 this story was repeated in Germany, when another company started refilling Alco2jet-bottles belonging to Sodastream. This was immediately met with legal action however in this case Sodastream lost as the German legal system concluded that this would constitute maintenance of an unwarranted monopoly thus leaving Germany without 3rd-party refilling. Because of European law, this law can probably now be applied to all of Europe however no small business has yet dared to challenge Sodastream while Sydbrand is still fresh in memory…
If you own a Sodastream in a country where Sodastream has a monopoly and you would like to make an effort for the environment, file a report with the authorities. If you think that the terms of your agreement are unreasonable, that it is unacceptable not to own canisters you have purchased, that it constitutes a misuse of a monopoly and or it helps increases prices, then take action and report this.
During the 80’s, when Partyman was still giving out free carbonic acid, their co-workers were trained by Sydbrand. None of Sodastream’s retailers were better trained and even today Sodastream’s retailers still don’t weigh bottles to ensure that they are properly refilled with the exact amount of carbon dioxide stated.
